Megabus, Stagecoach group low cost subsidiary, is planning two roundtrips per day between London, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam from April 12, 2012. Two more routes will be added daily between Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.
Born in 2003 in the UK, Megabus has developed a wide network of low cost intercity bus routes, serving 92 destinations daily and carrying more than three million passengers per year. The concept has been successfully exported to Canada and into the United States (70 cities, 16 million passengers per year).
But this is the first time Megabus buses cross European borders ouside the UK. Sir Brian Souter, Stagecoach co-founder and CEO has big ambitions : "Megabus has already transformed intercity journeys in the UK and North America. Our network in Europe will open a new and huge market", he said during a press conference. Price war
Enough to worry competitors like Eurolines, or future ones such as SNCF which is actively working on "Speed", an international bus lines project (read previous article)
Eurolines has already answered offering since early March 2012, a Paris-London bus trip starting from 9 euros. For it is with very attractive prices that Megabus hopes to conquer this new market on European road. The trip from Paris-London only costs £4 (about 5 euros) !
But for now, Megabus will only operate international connections, not open to cabotage. It is indeed not possible to hop on the bus from Boulogne-sur-Mer to go to Paris. But as the French regulations now allows it, it would be possible for Megabus to do cabotage with an authorization from the Ministry of (read previous article on the subject)
