France : city public transport traffic rose by 25% over 10 years

Between 2000 and 2010, public transport showed a 25% increase in French cities and suburbs according to key figures published by the Public transport and rail union (UTP). A much higher increase compared with other European countries, which was confirmed in 2011 and might continue in 2012 with gas prices rocketing.

Passengers trafic on city public transport has been growing constantly for the last ten years in France. Starting from base 1000 in 2000, trafic grew to 123 in 2010. It should reached 125 in 2011, that is another 4% increase.

A much better situation compared with other European countries such as Great Britain (117 in 2010), Germany (109), Spain, 110 or Italy (108) which thoroughly suffered from the economic crisis since 2008.
As far as figures are concerned, France is fourth in Europe with  5,30 millions passengers per year, just after Italy (5,34 millions) but due to the economic crisis, France might overpass Italy in 2012, and Great Britain (6,48 millions).

Mobilicités.com fished out those figures from Public transport and rail union (UTP) which annually publishes key figures of public transport in Paris area and provincial towns.
